In order to make this unique offering in Germany accessible to as many research institutions and partners from industry as possible, Fraunhofer operates various regional competence centers, each with its own research focus. They are the first point of contact for companies and research organizations in Germany that want to conduct research on and with quantum computing. The service is available not only to the institutes and facilities of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, but also to interested partners, i.e. research institutions, universities and companies. The prerequisite is a "Fraunhofer member contract".
In terms of content, a broad spectrum of application fields is covered, ranging from logistics, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, the financial and energy sectors, materials sciences, to IT security technologies.
Beyond the pure usage time, a multi-level training and further education offer with different courses is planned. Experts will advise interested parties on specific questions regarding the use of quantum computers. The quantum computer operates entirely under German law in this country – so Fraunhofer guarantees IP and data protection to the highest standards.
The quantum computer, the "IBM Q System One", is currently one of the most powerful quantum computing systems available and is located in Ehningen (Baden-Württemberg):
- 27 superconducting qubits
- Quantum volume of 32
- Coherence time ≈ 100 μs
- Error Single Qubit Gate ≈ 0.05%
- Error Double Qubit Gate ≈ 1%
- Operation time Double Qubit Gate ≈ 500 ns for CNOT
The computer has already been in operation since January 2021. Beyond the possibility of working on the locally installed quantum computer, there is cloud access to various IBM quantum computers in New York (USA).
